Dresden
This bombing campaign is easily one of the most controversial bombing campaigns as it occurred in a city that was essentially free from any conflict for the entire war and the war was nearing its end when this occurred. Between February 13th-14th between 35,000 to 135,000 people had been killed from the bombs, nobody knows the exact number for sure because of the amount of war refuges in the town. The reason why there was so many was because of the "red army" that was approaching the East and the German citizens were panic induced because of rumors of how they would be treated if the Russian army made it to the city. The main reasons for this bombing were, Dresden was producing weapons and equipment for the Nazi army, and was also a rail base for troops. Another theory is that it was used to "intimidate" the Russian army because the allies knew that Russia would become a problem after the war. It occurred in three waves and over 1300 bombers were used
